Hungarian police have launched an investigation into a capital increase of approximately 79.63 billion forints related to the Paks II nuclear power plant project. The investigation, ordered by the National Investigation Bureau's Corruption and Economic Crime Department on August 26, focuses on suspected breach of trust causing particularly significant financial loss.

The probe follows a decision by the Court of Justice of the European Union to annul the European Commission's approval of state aid for the Paks II project. Despite this, the Hungarian government proceeded with the fund transfer in late December, directing the money to the Russian contractor, Atomstroyexport.

Former Member of Parliament Bence Tordai, who filed the complaints, stated that the investigation could involve high-ranking officials, including Viktor Orbán, Péter Szijjártó, Márton Nagy, and Levente Magyar. The funds were transferred despite the lack of a valid EU state aid permit.
