Hungarian police sting arrests scammers after elderly man’s cooperation

Police investigators from the Nyíregyháza Criminal Department staged a sting operation on April 19‑20, using an elderly man who had been targeted by fraudsters claiming to be cyber‑crime investigators. The man was coached to go to a bank, where officers played a recorded bank teller voice and filmed a fake cash hand‑over. After the ruse, the team escorted him to his apartment and, together with several colleagues positioned nearby, intercepted the fraudsters as they arrived. The operation resulted in the arrest of the scammers, who were caught trying to claim the money.

The police highlighted the victim’s cooperation, calling him “a perfect victim” for the sting. The successful bust was reported by senior inspector Andrea Gombos of the department’s General Property Protection Sub‑division.
