Hungarian Police Warn of SMS Phishing Scam Targeting Drivers

The Hungarian National Police issued an urgent warning on its Facebook page about a large‑scale SMS phishing campaign aimed at vehicle owners. The fraudulent message, quoted as “Új közlekedési rendsértést regisztráltak az ön járművére”, claims that a traffic fine has been registered and includes a link to a counterfeit payment site. Recipients who follow the link and enter bank‑card or personal data expose themselves to immediate theft of funds.

Police advise not to click any links in unsolicited SMS, never to provide personal or banking information on such pages, delete the message, and block the sender. If a victim has already entered data, they should contact their bank to freeze the card and file a report at the nearest police station. Official fines can only be verified through government portals such as Ügyfélkapu or E‑Papír.
