Hungarian political debate intensifies over budget and agriculture

Six months after the election, members of the Tisza Party and opposition representatives are debating the current government's economic and agricultural direction in Hungary.

Dr. Gábor Ferenczi, a Tisza Party MP, stated that while a budget deficit of over 3,000 billion forints left by the previous administration has slowed the implementation of party promises, the party remains committed to its program. He noted that more program elements are expected to appear in the 2027 budget.

Meanwhile, KDNP representative Csaba Latorcai criticized the current administration for failing to support farmers facing both natural droughts and new economic pressures. He specifically raised concerns regarding a proposal to reduce VAT on fruits and vegetables and warned that the wealth tax could unfairly impact producers by treating essential assets like tractors and farmland as taxable wealth.

In response, Agriculture Minister Szabolcs Bóna argued that the government inherited difficult economic conditions and emphasized the need to restructure the agricultural sector to ensure income generation. He addressed the VAT reduction as a promise that requires careful management due to the inherited fiscal situation.
