Hungarian political landscape shifts amid Fidesz decline and Tisza Party rise

The Hungarian political landscape is undergoing significant shifts following recent electoral outcomes. The Tisza Party secured 141 mandates, while the former governing Fidesz-KDNP alliance saw a substantial decline, retaining only 52 representatives. Despite this loss, Fidesz maintained a significant voter base, receiving 38.6 percent of the vote, equivalent to approximately 2.5 million people.

Fidesz faces internal challenges regarding leadership succession and party identity. A new rule imposing a 12-year limit on parliamentary terms could impact nearly half of the current Fidesz faction, potentially removing many long-standing and experienced politicians. This rule is viewed as a mechanism for political renewal that simultaneously risks a loss of institutional knowledge and discipline.

In contrast, the current government's first hundred days have been marked by a shift in public sentiment. While structural improvements in sectors like healthcare and infrastructure have not materialized, there are noted improvements in financial confidence and economic expectations. This emerging sense of optimism is described as a departure from previous political cycles in Hungary.
