Hungarian politicians launch Civic Democrats initiative

Politicians Tibor Navracsics and Orsolya Ferencz, both previously associated with the moderate and civic-minded wing of Fidesz, have announced a new initiative called the ‘Civic Democrats’. On August 20, they stated that the extreme confrontation between Hungary’s primary political camps is damaging national unity and emphasized the need for dialogue.

This move comes amid a shifting political landscape following the April 12 elections, which saw the former governing parties move into opposition while the Tisza party formed a single-party government. The initiative follows observations of Fidesz shifting toward more radical right-wing positions and potential tactical coordination between the Mi Hazánk party and other right-wing opposition forces to challenge the current government.
