Hungarian parliament committee to rule on MP Magyar Péter's immunity

The Hungarian Parliament’s Immunity Committee will meet on Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. in a closed session to examine five parliamentary‑immunity cases. The agenda includes MP Magyar Péter, as well as Varga Lőrinc Mihály, Takács Péter and two cases concerning Toroczkai László. The committee, chaired by Sasi‑Nagy Edit, has recommended that Magyar Péter’s immunity be retained, while proposing its suspension for Varga Lőrinc, Takács Péter and Toroczkai László.

Magyar Péter is accused of taking a man’s mobile phone in a Budapest nightclub in June 2024 and later discarding it in the Danube, prompting a theft investigation. Two additional proceedings against him involve defamation claims launched by the Mi Hazánk Movement and Simonka György. Varga Lőrinc faced a drunk‑driving allegation in 2024 before his election to parliament. The committee’s stance follows its practice of keeping immunity in private‑law matters and suspending it in public‑law cases. The final decisions will be taken by the full Parliament after the committee’s recommendation.
