Hungarian Prime Minister Peter Magyar criticised over energy crisis amid low Danube water levels

Fidesz parliamentary faction leader Bóka János accused Prime Minister Peter Magyar of evading responsibility for Hungary’s energy crisis, saying the government failed to anticipate the impact of the Danube’s record‑low water level. The low water reduced cooling capacity at the Paksi Nuclear Power Plant, forcing the shutdown of the 3rd reactor block and cutting the output of the 2nd block by half, lowering total generation from about 2,000 MW to roughly 960 MW. A technical fault at the Danube Power Plant caused an additional loss of around 400 MW. Bóka described the cabinet’s response as “Facebook‑governance” and urged immediate action, while Magyar reassured that electricity supply remained stable but warned a full plant shutdown could become necessary if water levels kept falling.
