Hungarian Prime Minister Peter Magyar orders remote work and cooling shelters amid extreme heat

Prime Minister Peter Magyar announced that on Monday and Tuesday the government would order home‑working for public employees and asked private firms to follow suit where possible. He urged employers to postpone outdoor work, including in agriculture and construction, and called on restaurants to provide water and washing facilities for those seeking relief. Public buildings such as temples and other institutions were instructed to open as cooling centres.

Magyar also warned that Hungary’s budget deficit could rise to around 7‑8 % without EU funds, accusing the previous administration of under‑reporting deficits and highlighting that 91 bridges are in critical condition. On the hottest day of the year, temperatures measured up to 47 °C in Budapest, with the prime minister’s own observations confirming extreme heat across the capital.

The measures aim to protect public health during the heat wave while addressing broader fiscal challenges.
