Hungarian Prime Minister Peter Magyar Presses Prosecutor Over Ukrainian Gold Convoy Investigation

Hungarian Prime Minister Peter Magyar has given General Prosecutor Gábor Bálint Nagy a deadline until 15:00 on Thursday to publish details of the investigation into the March seizure of a Ukrainian cash and gold convoy on Hungarian territory. Magyar warned that if the prosecutor does not disclose the information, he will release it himself and has suggested that Nagy should consider resigning.

The convoy, intercepted by the anti‑terror unit TEK on 5 March, contained approximately €40 million in cash, $35 million and nine kilograms of gold. It was part of a regular transfer between the Ukrainian state bank and Austrian banks and was seized without clear legal justification, prompting diplomatic tension between Hungary and Ukraine. The previous Orbán government framed the seizure as a crackdown on illegal transport, while Ukrainian officials accused Hungary of a provocation and of using the funds for political leverage.

Magyar has also demanded answers on which suspects have been questioned and why, and indicated he holds “very interesting and important” information that he will make public if the prosecutor fails to comply.
