Hungarian Prosecution Service faces leadership uncertainty

Lawyer Péter Zamecsnik has noted a tense atmosphere within the Hungarian Prosecution Service, citing uncertainty due to the vacant Chief Prosecutor position and the upcoming expiration of Deputy Public Prosecutor István Lajtár’s mandate.

Zamecsnik suggested that an external candidate might be more effective at leading the organization objectively, as internal leaders may be constrained by existing systems and habits. He also noted that political disagreements between the President and the Prime Minister regarding the appointment should be resolved before a new candidate is publicly introduced.

Regarding potential criminal investigations into former government officials, Zamecsnik emphasized that political or social expectations are insufficient for legal action. He stated that serious evidence is required for criminal proceedings, rather than relying on public speculation or rumors.
