Hungary authorities prosecute multiple fraud and extortion cases
Hungarian authorities are addressing several distinct criminal cases involving financial fraud and impersonation.
In Szolnok, a 26-year-old man faces charges for unjust enrichment after an administrative error resulted in him receiving approximately 1.9 million forints instead of his usual 193,820 forint salary. The man reportedly spent the surplus within three days and subsequently ceased attending work, leaving a debt of over 1.6 million forints to his employer.
In Tatabánya, two men have been arrested for suspected VAT fraud involving the jewelry trade. They are accused of causing nearly 1 billion forints in budgetary damage by using fictitious invoices to reduce tax liabilities on jewelry imported from Europe and the Far East.
A separate large-scale investigation in Bács-Kiskun has led to charges against ten individuals, including a tax expert, for a massive VAT fraud scheme exceeding 2 billion forints. The scheme involved trading frozen chicken products through a chain of fictitious companies to evade taxes.
Additionally, three men are facing charges for extortion and kidnapping. One suspect allegedly impersonated an intelligence officer to demand 2 billion forints from a victim, while others posed as police officers to forcibly remove the individual from his home under the guise of an official proceeding involving the National Asset Management and Asset Protection Agency.
