Hungarian prosecutors charge two suspects with online fraud schemes

A 31‑year‑old man from Jászfenyveszar, Hungary, was indicted by the Lenti District Prosecutor's Office for defrauding seven buyers of non‑existent chilies. Over a week in September‑October 2024 he collected about HUF 160,000 through false online ads and is facing a prison sentence, despite previous fraud convictions.

Separately, a woman in her twenties living near Eger was charged by the Nagyatád District Prosecutor's Office for posting fabricated advertisements for books and event tickets. She duped around 40 victims, gaining roughly HUF 500,000, with the largest loss suffered by a football fan who paid for Euro Championship tickets that never existed. Prosecutors have asked for a suspended prison term and probation.

Both cases illustrate a rise in internet‑based scams in Hungary, prompting authorities to advise consumers to verify sellers and avoid advance payments to unknown parties.
