Hungarian public overwhelmingly backs medical cannabis legalization

A representative survey commissioned by the Hungarian Medical Cannabis Association and carried out by the research firm Medián found that a large majority of Hungarians support the use of cannabis‑based medicines. Seventy‑eight percent of respondents said they were already aware of medical cannabis products, and 81 % said they would find it acceptable for doctors to prescribe them for certain illnesses. Seventy‑nine percent backed the idea of regulated access within Hungary, while 89 % would approve such treatment for themselves or a close family member. Support was highest among young adults, with 97 % in that age group approving medical prescriptions.

Currently only one CBD‑based drug with an EU marketing authorisation is listed in the Hungarian drug register, and there is no comprehensive medical‑cannabis programme in place. Experts cited in the survey, including addictologist Dr. Személyácz János, note promising research on CBD for childhood epilepsy, multiple sclerosis and as an adjunct in cancer therapy. The report also referenced Germany’s recent legalisation of recreational cannabis and its positive outcomes for medical users.

The findings suggest strong societal backing for expanding medical cannabis availability in Hungary, potentially influencing future policy decisions.
