Hungarian public media faces internal unrest after election

Following a significant electoral defeat for the Fidesz party, tensions have escalated within Hungary's public media institutions, including MTVA and MTI. Reports describe a highly charged atmosphere characterized by internal conflicts and debates over editorial autonomy.

In one documented incident at the MTVA headquarters, reporter Attila Császár engaged in a heated verbal confrontation with a female MTI colleague. Witnesses reported that Császár used aggressive language, questioning the colleague's professional stance by referencing her salary and employment status.

Simultaneously, a group of approximately thirty MTI employees signed a document, referred to as a ‘Peasant Revolt,’ demanding the restoration of independent and impartial professional service. This movement comes amid concerns that staff are struggling to navigate a transition from a system of centralized leadership responsibility to one requiring individual editorial decision-making, with some employees still exhibiting signs of self-censorship.
