Hungarian public media plans layoffs of up to 160 employees
The interim leadership of Hungarian public media, Magyar Rádió és Televízió Nonprofit Zrt., has begun negotiations with employee representatives regarding a group workforce reduction. The restructuring could affect a maximum of 160 employees, though the final number depends on the outcome of ongoing discussions.
An internal review conducted by the interim management revealed a dual organizational structure that has operated in parallel for fifteen years. The review also identified overlapping units and overpriced, non-performing contracts. Addressing these issues has reportedly resulted in 20 billion forints in operational cost savings.
The layoffs are expected to primarily impact television and radio sectors, with a smaller portion affecting back-office roles. Approximately 140 employees may be dismissed, while an additional 20 individuals who had previously been suspended from work may also be affected. The Magyar Távirati Irod (MTI) will not be part of this reduction.
Negotiations involving works councils and trade unions are expected to conclude by the end of November. Following this, affected staff will receive individual written notifications. Employment terminations may occur at least 30 days after such notice. Management stated that decisions will be based on objective criteria, including professional experience, qualifications, and job necessity.
