Hungarian railway officials face scrutiny over luxury travel and MÁV procurement

Hungarian political figures are engaged in a dispute regarding the use of specialized railway equipment. MP Balázs Németh accused Dávid Vitézy of using a private, luxury train consisting of nostalgia carriages to travel from the Serbian border to Budapest following negotiations in Kelebia.

Vitézy denied the allegations of luxury travel, explaining that he and his colleagues were participating in a trial run to inspect the overhead lines on the Budapest–Belgrade railway line. He stated that MÁV used nostalgia carriages for the test because they did not want to withdraw standard passenger cars from service for the technical inspection. Vitézy noted that technical and software tasks remain unfinished despite previous government promises regarding the line's completion.

Separately, allegations have surfaced regarding systemic corruption and procurement irregularities within the Hungarian State Railways (MÁV). Sources claim that public tenders for track maintenance, infrastructure, and vehicle repairs are often tailored for a specific inner circle in a manner described as "mafia-like." These reports suggest that procurement monopolies have been established and that some companies have faced life-threatening threats when attempting to operate outside these established channels. While a government anti-corruption initiative is underway, MÁV has reportedly remained largely unaffected by these efforts so far.
