Hungarian retirees face financial constraints in lifestyle and healthcare
A recent survey by the OTP Pension Fund reveals that 65% of retirees in Hungary must forgo certain activities due to financial constraints. Key areas of reduction include foreign travel (41%), domestic holidays (38%), cultural programs (32%), and dining out (32%). Additionally, approximately one-third of retirees are forced to cut spending on private healthcare or dental care (31%), home renovations (31%), and high-quality food (27%).
Gender disparities are evident, with 69% of women and 55% of men reporting such sacrifices. Financial preparedness significantly impacts lifestyle; 67% of those who planned for retirement report no lifestyle changes, compared to only 17% of those who felt unprepared. The study notes that only 17% of current retirees saved specifically for old age, while 59% did not save for retirement at all, often prioritizing immediate needs like child-rearing or housing.
Regarding pension calculations, the amount is determined by the average net career earnings since 1988 and the number of officially recognized years of service. Since the removal of the contribution ceiling in 2013, higher earners contribute based on their full income, which can increase the calculated average career earnings.
