Hungarian retirement data shows significant gender gap
Data from the Hungarian State Treasury reveals a significant gap in the duration of retirement between men and women in Hungary. For those who passed away in 2025, male retirees spent an average of 19.1 years in retirement, while female retirees spent an average of 26.7 years.
This disparity is driven by both higher life expectancy among women and earlier retirement ages. For new retirees established in the first half of 2026, the average age for men is 65.1, compared to 62.6 for women. The 'Nők 40' (Women 40) benefit, which allows eligible women to retire earlier after 40 years of service, is cited as a key factor contributing to this trend.
Mihály Karácsony, president of the Pensioners' Parliament, noted that these statistics are vital for comparing the amount of social security contributions paid into the state budget against the benefits eventually received. He also cautioned against direct international comparisons, noting that Hungary's Pension Insurance Fund is part of the state budget, whereas most EU countries operate under different institutional frameworks.
