Hungarian road authority warns of extra fees for e‑vignette mistakes

The Hungarian Public Road Company (Magyar Közút) cautions drivers that errors made when purchasing electronic motorway vignettes can result in additional charges. During the summer peak—June, July and August—approximately one‑third of the annual 15.5 million e‑vignettes are sold, about 4.8 million each year. In this period, mistakes such as incorrect licence‑plate numbers, region codes or vehicle‑category entries rise sharply.

Annually, 23‑24 thousand drivers request licence‑plate corrections and 4‑5 thousand request category or region adjustments. When the data entered does not match the vehicle, the system flags the use as unauthorized and the vehicle owner may be billed a surcharge. Corrections are possible but require paperwork and may not eliminate the penalty if the vehicle was used on an unpaid route. The agency advises motorists to verify all vehicle details before confirming the purchase to avoid unnecessary time, money and energy waste.
