Hungarian SMEs express support for Euro adoption

A survey conducted by Scale Research for UniCredit Bank indicates that two-thirds of Hungarian small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) support the introduction of the Euro. Approximately 67 percent of respondents favor the transition, while 15 percent oppose it and 18 percent remain neutral.

Many Hungarian businesses already operate with the Euro, using it for international trade, supplier payments, or receiving a portion of their revenue. While the transition could reduce exchange rate volatility and administrative burdens, business owners expressed concerns regarding increased price transparency and competition. There are also fears that Euro adoption could lead to higher wage demands, increasing operational costs.

Economist Ákos Kozák noted that the Euro could provide much-needed predictability and stability amidst current inflation and exchange rate volatility. He suggested a target date of 2032–2033 for adoption, provided there is adequate fiscal and monetary preparation. Kozák also emphasized the need for a new economic model to move beyond consumption-driven growth and highlighted the necessity of increasing the productivity of Hungarian micro and small businesses.
