Hungarian solar sector requires better regulation and storage

The Hungarian solar energy sector requires more predictable regulation, improved electrical grids, and increased energy storage capacity to sustain its growth, according to Ernő Kiss, president of the Hungarian Solar Energy and Collector Association.

Currently, Hungary has 8,846 MW of installed solar capacity, accounting for 29 percent of electricity production. The sector employs approximately 47,000 people. While capacity is expected to grow by 1 GW annually—potentially reaching 8 to 9 GW by 2030—experts note that the industry faces political and policy challenges rather than technological ones.

The association has submitted a package of proposals to the government addressing both residential and corporate sectors, as well as the electrical system. While 500 billion HUF in EU funds is earmarked for grid development, low storage capacity remains a critical concern.
