Hungarian Speaker Ágnes Forsthoffer meets Ukrainian Speaker in Rome

Hungarian Parliament Speaker Ágnes Forsthoffer held a bilateral meeting with Ukrainian Speaker Ruslan Stefanchuk in Rome during the Conference of European Parliamentary Speakers. This marks the first meeting between the speakers of the two nations since the outbreak of the Russian-Ukrainian war.

Forsthoffer expressed sympathy regarding the war and condemned Russian aggression, noting that while Hungary remains committed to humanitarian aid and supporting refugees, it will not provide military equipment or soldiers to Ukraine. The discussion also addressed the situation of the Hungarian minority in Transcarpathia, with Forsthoffer welcoming the Ukrainian Parliament's adoption of laws regarding minority educational rights and its condemnation of Soviet reprisals against Hungarians and Germans between 1944 and 1946.

Stefanchuk expressed gratitude for Hungary's humanitarian efforts and its support in advancing Ukraine's EU accession negotiations, specifically regarding the opening of the first and sixth clusters. Forsthoffer emphasized that direct parliamentary dialogue is essential for good neighborly relations and regional peace.
