Hungarian State Opera director and actress clash over public funding

A public dispute has intensified between actress and author Natália Nagy and Szilveszter Ókovács, the director of the Hungarian State Opera, regarding the use of public funds for cultural institutions.

Nagy and her husband, Attila Vincze, issued a detailed response arguing that state funding should prioritize essential services like healthcare, education, and public safety over productions serving a narrow elite. They contended that cultural projects catering to a small audience should be sustained through private capital or market mechanisms rather than taxpayer money.

In response, Ókovács rejected allegations of political favoritism, emphasizing his professional background and long-standing tenure at the Opera. He defended state subsidies, arguing that without them, ticket prices for opera would become prohibitively expensive for the general public. Ókovács also highlighted programs designed to bring tens of thousands of high school students to performances, asserting that the institution works to prevent cultural elitism by ensuring accessibility for younger generations.
