Hungarian students win silver at International AI Olympiad
Hungarian high school students secured two silver medals at the 3rd International Olympiad in Artificial Intelligence (IOAI) held in Astana, Kazakhstan, from August 2 to August 8, 2026.
Out of 440 students representing more than 100 countries, Bálint Tédi and Vince Ungár earned the silver medals. The four-member Hungarian team also included Marcell Jurácsik and Linda Szekeres. The team was led by Associate Professor László Gulyás and doctoral student Gergő Szalay from Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE).
The competition required participants to demonstrate expertise in various AI fields, including distinguishing between AI-generated and human-written text, restoring scrambled dialogues, and attempting to deceive image recognition models using tools like embeddings and PyTorch. The preparation for the team was a collaborative effort between ELTE's Faculty of Informatics and the Neumann Society's Department of Artificial Intelligence and Talent Management. The training materials developed by ELTE have reportedly garnered international interest.
