Hungarian tax authority investigates ‘Most vagy soha!’ film subsidies
The Hungarian National Tax and Customs Administration (NAV) has launched an investigation into suspected budgetary fraud regarding the use of state subsidies for the film ‘Most vagy soha!’. The production, which depicts the events of the March 15, 1848, revolution, received approximately 4.5 billion HUF in state support, later supplemented by an additional 200 million HUF.
Producer and screenwriter Philip Rákay has issued a statement denying any personal responsibility for the use of the funds. Rákay noted that he was not informed of the investigation by the tax authority and clarified that, while he served as creative producer, he held no role in the Pilvax Film Kft. company that applied for the subsidies, nor was he involved in production management or financial decision-making.
The film, directed by Balázs Lóth, is noted as one of the most expensive in Hungarian film history, with a total budget reported at approximately 7.022 billion HUF. Despite its scale and various promotional efforts, the film saw a theatrical turnout of roughly 164,000 viewers.
