Hungarian telecom providers implement significant service fee increases

Telecommunications providers in Hungary have implemented significant price increases for internet and television services. While some companies like Magyar Telekom, Yettel, and One applied a standard 4.4 percent inflation-based adjustment in July, individual customers have reported much higher surges. In some documented cases, monthly internet fees increased by as much as 140 percent.

These drastic changes often stem from the removal of previous discounts, the discontinuation of older service packages, or the unilateral modification of subscription contracts. The National Media and Infocommunications Authority (NMHH) stated that such increases are legal provided that providers notify customers at least 30 days in advance. Notifications may be delivered via paper, email, SMS, or printed on invoices.

If a customer does not accept the new terms, they have the right to terminate their contract within 45 days of receiving the notification, even if they are under a fixed-term agreement. However, providers often replace discontinued packages with more expensive alternatives, leaving long-term customers with fewer low-cost options.
