Hungarian thermal baths reopen or expand following renovations

The Miskolctapolca Cave Bath has officially reopened following a two-year closure caused by a fire triggered by an electrical short circuit. The renovation of the facility, which is rare in Europe due to its location within natural cave passages, cost approximately 1.5 billion forints. While the reopening is expected to revitalize local tourism and businesses in Miskolctapolca, the medical department remains closed for the time being.

Separately, the Gyula Castle Bath is moving forward with several new development projects despite a slower-than-expected start to the summer season. Planned improvements include sauna renovations, the installation of solar panels, and the reconstruction of a wave pool. Management noted that while early summer tourism was impacted by cheap foreign travel options and a strengthening forint affecting international visitors, a recovery in August is expected to help ensure a successful year.
