Hungarian tourism survey highlights tax and administrative burdens
A summer survey conducted by the Hungarian Tourism Agency (MTÜ) has highlighted the primary challenges facing the tourism sector. Out of approximately 3,000 evaluable responses from over 50,000 registered providers, 90 percent of respondents were micro-enterprises.
Key issues identified across the industry include high tax and contribution burdens (42 percent), excessive administration and data reporting (40 percent), and high energy and operating costs (38 percent). The survey revealed specific pressures depending on the business type: private accommodations cited administration as their top concern (46 percent), the catering sector highlighted high taxes (60 percent), and hotels, pensions, and campsites identified energy and operating costs as the primary issue (53-55 percent).
In response to these findings, the Hungarian Apartment Lenders Association has expressed support for the agency's openness to dialogue. The association is specifically calling for a one-year extension of the moratorium on short-term apartment rentals in Budapest, which is set to expire at the end of the year.
