Hungarian tourism trends show domestic decline and record growth in Croatia
Tourism trends for Hungarian travelers show diverging patterns between domestic and international destinations. In Hungary, August saw a significant decline in tourism, with approximately 2.6 million guests arriving—a 7.3 percent decrease compared to the previous year. Guest nights also fell by 5.8 percent to 6.9 million. Experts attribute this downturn to the absence of major events that boosted numbers in previous years, such as the MotoGP and Formula 1 races, as well as lower attendance at the Sziget Festival.
In contrast, Hungarian tourism in Croatia has reached record levels. By the end of September, 834,000 Hungarian tourists recorded over 4 million guest nights in Croatia, marking a 12 percent increase in visitors and a 10 percent increase in guest nights compared to the same period in 2024. The Kvarner Gulf remains the most popular destination for Hungarians, followed by Istria and Zadar County. Dubrovnik also saw a 44 percent increase in popularity, aided by direct flights from Ryanair and Wizz Air. Within Croatia, hotel stays saw the most significant growth at 17 percent, while camping and private accommodations also experienced increases.
