Hungarian Transport Minister Vitézy David Orders Railway Audit and Highlights EU Funds

Transport Minister Vitézy David announced a comprehensive review of the Budapest–Belgrade railway project. The audit will examine the project's procurement, the decision to pay the Hungarian contractor in US dollars, and will make all related documents public. Cooperation with the Chinese partner is required, and the line’s Chinese signalling system is awaiting regulatory approval. German TÜV certification may also be involved before the system can be handed over.

David also said that about €16.4 billion in EU recovery funds are arriving in Hungary, the largest portion coming from the Recovery and Resilience Facility. However, Hungary has not yet accessed its roughly €10 billion allocation because the EU requires new anti‑corruption and transparency legislation. The government plans to submit the required law to parliament soon, after which the funds can be released.
