Budapest–Belgrade railway passenger service slated for autumn launch
Hungarian Transport and Investment Minister Dávid Vitézy and Serbian Transport Minister Aleksandra Sofronijević said passenger trains on the Budapest–Belgrade line could start later this autumn, provided final safety tests on the Hungarian section are completed successfully. The European Train Control System (ETCS) Level 2 signalling is being finalised, allowing passenger trains to run at up to 160 km/h. A Chinese supplier confirmed the ETCS equipment is ready and large‑scale testing began on the Budapest‑Kelebia segment, with trials expected to finish within two weeks. Freight trains already operate on the line and the Hungarian infrastructure is fully built. A public consultation on the timetable has been opened, and officials plan a test run on 24 August that will include border and customs procedures. Both governments view the railway as a strategic link that strengthens Serbia’s European integration and may later be extended to Vienna.
