Hungarian travel habits shift toward Asian destinations, study shows
A survey commissioned by Revolut and conducted by Dynata reveals that 41% of Hungarian respondents expect to travel in 2026 as a way to escape adult responsibilities, with the figure rising to 60% among 18‑24‑year‑olds. The main motivations are mental recharge (32%), work‑related stress (15%) and financial concerns (9%). 28% do not view travel primarily as escape, a view that grows with age.
Europe remains the primary region for Hungarian trips, especially Austria, Italy, Spain and Germany, but spending in the United Kingdom, France, the Netherlands, Italy and Germany has fallen compared with the previous year. In contrast, expenditures in Slovakia rose 11%, and travel to Asia showed double‑digit growth: transactions to Vietnam increased 35%, Hong Kong 30%, the Philippines 25% and Thailand 17%.
When asked which destinations most profoundly change travelers, a separate analysis of Reddit posts identified Japan as the top influence, followed by India and New Zealand. Respondents said Japan’s blend of modernity and tradition taught them to notice environmental details, while India’s vibrant chaos and New Zealand’s natural serenity left lasting personal impressions.
