Hungarian universities add 1,000 dormitory beds with new campus projects

Széchenyi István University in Győr is renovating its Cuha street building, which had served as a workers’ dorm for about ten years. After a 195 million‑forint refurbishment, the site will reopen as a student dormitory in September, offering 300 new beds and upgraded security systems.

At the same time, the University of Szeged is preparing a seven‑storey, U‑shaped dormitory on its Öthalmi Campus that could provide around 700 additional places. The project, previously stalled due to lack of national funding, may be financed with unlocked European Union Recovery Fund resources, aiming to relieve a severe shortage where roughly 25,000 students currently have fewer than 4,000 dormitory spots nationwide.

Both developments are part of broader efforts to expand student housing capacity in Hungary.
