Hungarian Velencei-tó faces record low water, real‑estate market stalls

Mid‑July saw the water level of Hungary's Velencei-tó drop to unprecedented lows, leaving the lakeside shoreline largely barren and exposing mud‑filled banks. The scarcity of water has discouraged visitors and stalled the local tourism season.

The decline has also rippled into the real‑estate market. Property demand around the lake has fallen sharply, with sellers waiting months for offers and prices slipping. A 160 m² vacation home took a full year to sell for HUF 90 million, and a 40‑unit housing project reports no interested buyers despite ongoing construction. Analysts attribute the slowdown to the deteriorating lake conditions and the resulting uncertainty for investors.

Local residents and real‑estate agents warn that continued low water could further depress sales and halt new developments, raising concerns about the long‑term viability of the Velencei‑tó area as a holiday and residential destination.
