Hungarian wheat harvest faces water shortage amid declining yields
The Food and Agriculture Organization projects global grain production for the 2025/26 marketing year at 3,043 million tonnes, a 6.1 % rise over 2024, driven mainly by higher corn output. Global grain stocks are expected to reach 952.2 million tonnes, 9.5 % above opening levels, while grain trade is forecast at 508.6 million tonnes, up 4.8 %. Prices rose 6.3 % between January and May 2026 because of weather worries and higher fuel and fertilizer costs, although the FAO grain‑price index remained below its 2022 peak.
In Hungary, the 2026 wheat crop is projected to fall short of 4 million tonnes, roughly one million tonnes less than a normal year, as severe drought and extreme summer heat reduced yields. Farmers estimate that domestic storage capacity can accommodate the reduced harvest, but export volumes are likely to shrink to about 500 000 tonnes, far below the usual 1.5 million‑tonne level. Water scarcity is cited as the biggest constraint, with some regions receiving only six millimetres of rain during the growing season. While modern seed varieties and precision technology help, growers such as Vincze László and Kocsis János stress that irrigation development and appropriate varietal selection are now essential to sustain wheat production.
