Hungarian wheat production split by extreme drought

Extreme weather conditions and a lack of significant rainfall since May have caused a sharp divide in wheat production capabilities across Hungary. Results from the joint post-registration variety trials conducted by the National Association of Grain Producers (GOSZ), the Seed Association Professional Organization and Product Council (VSZT), and the National Agricultural Chamber (NAK) show massive differences in outcomes between various regions of the country.

Despite the drought, the trials indicate that the genetic background of the tested varieties remains sufficient, with all examined varieties being suitable for commercial cultivation. Experts emphasize that variety selection must be made at the field level, tailored to specific local conditions. The organizations consider the continuation of these multi-site, standardized methodology trials strategically important for providing objective data to farmers facing unprecedented extreme weather.
