Hungarian wildlife: Seasonal bird arrivals and rare species
Various bird species are marking the seasonal transitions in Hungary. The European bee-eater, known for its vibrant colors and aerial acrobatics, typically arrives in mid-May from its wintering grounds in Africa. These birds nest in colonies by digging holes up to 2 meters deep into vertical sand or loess walls. They rely heavily on flying insects like wasps and bees for sustenance.
Additionally, the rare Short-toed snake eagle is observed during its migration and breeding seasons. This large predator, characterized by its light underparts and wide wingspan, primarily feeds on snakes and other reptiles. In Hungary, it is a rare breeder, often found in mid-mountain forests near open, dry areas, where it nests in pine or oak trees.
