Hungarian women's magazines demand Istanbul Convention ratification

Thirteen Hungarian women's magazines have launched a unified campaign calling on the Hungarian government to ratify the Istanbul Convention. The initiative, launched on October 11 to coincide with UNICEF's International Day of the Girl Child, aims to draw attention to the safety of women and children and the need for more effective action against domestic violence.

Although Hungary signed the international treaty in 2014, it has not yet been ratified or implemented into the national legal system. The participating publications—including Elle, Glamour, Marie Claire, Nők Lapja, and WMN.hu—will use their platforms to provide educational content and reports through November 25, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.

The campaign emphasizes that the convention provides a complex framework for prevention, intervention, and the prevention of impunity regarding gender-based inequality and violence. The organizers are calling on civil society, professional organizations, and the press to support the movement and a related petition.
