Hungarian Youth Center opens in Cluj-Napoca, Romania

The Magyar Ifjúsági Központ (Hungarian Youth Center) officially opened on Tuesday in a historic building on Sextil Pușcariu (Bocskai) Street in Cluj-Napoca. The centre, leased for five years from the Transylvanian Reformed Church, provides permanent offices for three Hungarian youth organisations—the Kolozsvári Magyar Diákszövetség (KMDSZ), the Kolozs Megyei Magyar Diáktanács (KMDT) and the Országos Magyar Diákszövetség (OMDSZ)—as well as conference rooms, event halls and communal spaces that can be used free of charge by any group working with Hungarian youth.

The project was realised with the backing of the VIBE Festival, whose OffSeason bar occupies the ground floor of the building. organisers highlighted the centre’s role in fostering collaboration, training and community‑building among the Hungarian minority in Transylvania. At the inauguration, concerns were raised about a recent street fight outside the bar and about the promotion of cheap alcohol within the premises, prompting the church and the festival’s management to address questions of responsibility and safety.

The centre aims to become a permanent hub for youth activities, reducing the logistical burden on the organisations and strengthening the cultural presence of the Hungarian community in Romania.
