Hungarians estimate 35 million HUF needed for retirement savings

According to the second quarterly results of the K&H Insurance ‘Secure Future’ study, middle-aged Hungarians believe they need an average of 35 million HUF in savings by age 65 to maintain a livable standard of living without state pensions.

This required amount has risen steadily over recent years. In 2021–2022, the average was 26 million HUF, increasing to 33.4 million in 2025, and reaching 35.1 million in the second quarter of 2026. The study highlights significant regional disparities: residents of Budapest estimate they need 44 million HUF, those in cities approximately 36–38 million HUF, and those in villages around 29 million HUF.

Regarding monthly contributions, the average amount respondents consider necessary is 49,000 HUF (excluding outliers), while the most frequently cited monthly figure is 50,000 HUF. Pálma Székely, head of sales and life insurance at K&H Insurance, noted that preparing for retirement is a long-term task. He pointed out that to accumulate 35 million HUF between ages 30 and 65 without interest, an individual would need to save more than 83,000 HUF per month.
