Hungaroring celebrates 40 years of Formula 1 history in Hungary

The Hungaroring celebrates its legacy as a cornerstone of Formula 1, beginning with its rapid construction and debut in 1986. Built in just eight months near Mogyoród, the circuit was a significant diplomatic and economic feat, serving as a gateway for the sport to enter the Eastern Bloc. The inaugural race drew approximately 200,000 spectators from across the socialist countries, including Czechoslovakia, Poland, Yugoslavia, and East Germany.

The first race featured a legendary field including Ayrton Senna, Nelson Piquet, Alain Prost, and Nigel Mansell, with Senna securing the first pole position. The following year, the 1987 Hungarian Grand Prix saw Nelson Piquet repeat his victory. That event was marked by Nigel Mansell's pole position during a wet qualifying session and significant driver movements, such as Piquet announcing his intention to leave Williams for Lotus.
