Hungary advances major M1 and M6 motorway infrastructure projects

Major infrastructure developments are underway on Hungary’s motorway network. The M1 motorway expansion enters a new phase this autumn, focusing on the section leading toward Győr. MKIF Zrt. announced that the project involves reconstructing the roadway with a 32-centimeter thick asphalt layer using a continuous crushed stone base for increased durability. The systemic development covers approximately 78 kilometers and includes the modernization of 11 junctions, the creation of 4 new grade-separated interchanges, and the reconstruction of 6 rest areas. Additionally, approximately 300 new truck parking spaces will be established, and noise barriers will be significantly expanded in length and height.

Separately, Minister of Transport and Investment Dávid Vitézy announced a new operating structure for the M6 motorway section between Dunaújváros and Érdi-tető. The new arrangement is expected to reduce costs for the next 11 years from the previously estimated 149 billion forints to 44 billion forints, without compromising service quality or employment levels. The contract will be maintained by the same provider that has operated the section for the past 22 years. Vitézy addressed political criticism regarding the decision, stating that the move prevents previous government-linked business circles from securing the contract at a significantly higher price.
