Balázs Hankó detained over National Cultural Fund grant allegations
Balázs Hankó, the former Hungarian Minister of Culture and Innovation, has been detained for one month following allegations of official misconduct. Prosecutors suspect that Hankó participated in the distribution of hundreds of grants through the National Cultural Fund (NKA) that were intended to finance Fidesz political campaigns or personal interests rather than legitimate cultural purposes.
Reports indicate that during the first three and a half months of 2026, Hankó approved approximately 3.63 billion HUF in NKA grants. This volume significantly exceeds the total amount distributed throughout the entire year of 2025. In response to the controversy, the minister's discretionary decision-making power over NKA funds is being reduced from 20 percent to 5 percent to ensure greater transparency and professional oversight.
In a separate but related matter of public fund scrutiny, the Prime Minister's Cabinet Office is investigating the circumstances surrounding 23 million HUF in non-refundable grants awarded to Rubint Réka's company, Norbi Duci Tréning Nonprofit Kft., during the period leading up to the 2026 elections. Former state secretary Veronika Varga-Bajusz has also been detained as part of the ongoing investigations.
