Hungary amends 2026 budget to address projected deficit
The Hungarian government is amending the 2026 budget to align fiscal laws with actual economic processes and improve transparency. The Ministry of Finance reported that the previous administration's budget, which projected a 3.7 percent GDP deficit, would have actually resulted in an 8.3 percent deficit due to campaign spending and unfavorable contracts.
To address this, the new government has reached an agreement with EU institutions regarding lost funds, which is expected to improve the balance by 0.5 percentage points of GDP. Additionally, reforms to public interest asset management foundations and lower bond market yields are expected to further reduce the deficit.
Separately, the government has revoked the priority status of several large-scale investments. While this returns decision-making power to local municipalities, analysts warn it increases investor uncertainty. Some projects, such as the Láng Machine Factory development and the Pázmány Campus, may face redesigns or potential cancellation as they lose the ability to bypass certain local regulations.
