Hungary and Ukraine prepare for first competitive match in 34 years

As the Hungarian national football team prepares to face Ukraine in a Nations League match at the Puskás Aréna, historical connections between the two sides have resurfaced. This upcoming fixture marks the first competitive meeting between the nations in 34 years.

Ukraine's first official matches in 1992 were both played against Hungary, with Hungary winning both encounters. During their first match in Ungvár, Hungary secured a 3-1 victory with goals from István Sallói and József Kiprich, while Ivan Hecko scored Ukraine's first official goal.

In a recent promotional video by the Ukrainian Association of Football, newcomer Illja Krupszkij incorrectly identified the scorer of Ukraine's first goal during a history quiz. Krupszkij named Maksym Sackih, whereas the correct answer is Ivan Hecko.
