Hungary announces education salary hikes and school development program

The gross average monthly salary in Hungary’s education sector rose to 792,000 HUF in August 2026, up from 704,000 HUF in August 2025, according to the Central Statistical Office. Despite this increase, many non-pedagogical staff (NOKS) report significantly lower net earnings, often around 280,000 HUF, leading to financial hardship.

Education and Children Minister Judit Lannert announced a new school development program and salary increases funded entirely by domestic budget resources. The plan aims to ensure teacher salaries reach at least 80 percent of the average graduate salary. The measures also include wage hikes for NOKS employees, technical staff, and support workers in kindergartens and schools.

Minister Lannert stated that the 2027 budget will focus on closing gaps, showing appreciation for staff, and renewing school environments. The salary adjustments for NOKS workers are expected to occur in two stages, with the first potentially in mid-October and the second on January 1, 2027. However, unions note that final financial decisions regarding the exact timing and amounts have not yet been confirmed by the ministry.
