Hungary announces pension changes and new benefits for 2027

The Hungarian government has announced a shift in its pension policy for 2027. While the 13th monthly pension and the first installment of the 14th monthly pension (equivalent to one week of benefits) will remain, the government will not proceed with the previously planned gradual expansion of the 14th pension.

Instead, the administration is focusing on increasing support for low-income pensioners through a separate increase and the introduction of a new 'Pensioner SZÉP card'. This card, intended for food, medicine, and leisure, will be rolled out gradually through 2030. In its first year, those with monthly pensions below 250,000 HUF will receive 50,000 HUF, while those between 250,000 and 500,000 HUF will receive 25,000 HUF. Those earning over 500,000 HUF will not be eligible for the card in the first year.

Analyses suggest that while these measures aim to assist lower-income groups, average pensioners may see a net decrease in annual benefits compared to the original expansion plan. General pensions are expected to rise by approximately 3% in January 2027, aligned with government inflation forecasts.
