Electric car sales surge as diesel demand falls in Hungary and Romania

In Hungary, Netrisk's analysis shows mandatory insurance premiums for electric vehicles fell 8% year‑on‑year and for hybrids 12%, while the share of electric‑only contracts rose to 3.6% in June, up from below 3% a year earlier. At the same time, interest in used diesel cars dropped 8.8% to 129,000 monthly inquiries, whereas inquiries for electric and hybrid models grew by 30% to about 49,000 per month. Hybrid demand increased 41.4% and electric demand rose 22%, with average prices for hybrids and pure‑electric cars falling modestly.

In Romania, June 2026 recorded a historic 2,264 new electric vehicles registered, the best monthly performance to date, and a total of 8,947 electric vehicles were added in the first half of the year. Electric‑powered sales grew 72% year‑on‑year, reaching a 64% market share. Tesla led the market with the Model 3 (494 units) and Model Y (325 units), followed by Renault, Dacia, and other brands. The Romanian Auto Manufacturers and Importers Association (APIA) reported that electrified models (including hybrids) accounted for 72% of sales in June, up 22.5% in market share.
