Hungary backs Montenegro's EU accession by 2028

Montenegrin Prime Minister Milojko Spajić met Hungarian Prime Minister Peter Magyar on the margins of the NATO summit in Ankara. Magyar said the new Hungarian government is firmly committed to EU enlargement and supports Montenegro becoming the next EU member by 2028, praising the country's reform progress and offering Hungarian participation in key infrastructure projects.

At a separate conference, Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić voiced skepticism about a rapid EU enlargement, stating that the bloc should not be expected to admit new members in the near term. He was joined by Italian Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini, who pledged Italy’s help to Serbia on its EU path. The remarks came amid ongoing accession talks for Serbia, Albania, Bosnia‑Herzegovina, North Macedonia, Kosovo and Montenegro, with Montenegro the only candidate hoping for entry by 2028.
